Where’s the Toilet?

Where’s the toilet?

It’s one of those phrases that comes in handy in every language.  Oh it is possible to convey “Where is the toilet” in nonverbal ways, which I have had to do on a number of occasions.    But when you get to the toilet how can you tell which one is for the men and which is for the women?  Now that can be a challenge.  Especially when there aren’t any pictures.

After all what are you going to do when monks wear robes that may be construed as dresses in black outlines on bathroom doors?  How can black outlines distinguish flowing robes of a sari or burka from the men’s flowing robes?  A few countries have taken that gotten creative about their signs.

Unquestionably my favorite sign for a toilet is at the white temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand.

  1. A topic on which much more could be said. The sign is great; you should collect more for an expanded version.
